REC PROGRAM OVERVIEW

How Players Progress Through Recreational Soccer

Rocklin FC Recreational Soccer is designed to grow with each player. Younger players begin with small-sided games that maximize touches on the ball and opportunities to learn. As players get older, the field expands, more teammates are introduced, and the game gradually progresses toward the full 11v11 format.

Each stage builds on the one before it.

  • 4v4 (4-5 Year Olds)

4v4 introduces young players to soccer in a fun, small-sided environment with lots of touches on the ball. Players develop basic dribbling, movement, confidence and an understanding of the game through play.

  • 5v5 (6-7 Year Olds)

5v5 builds on the fundamentals of small-sided soccer while introducing goalkeepers and basic team shape. Players develop passing, spacing, teamwork and an understanding of attacking and defending together.

  • 7v7 (8-9 Year Olds)

7v7 introduces a larger field and more defined positions while keeping the game small enough for frequent involvement. Players develop spacing, passing, teamwork and a better understanding of attacking and defending.

  • 9v9 (10-11 Year Olds)

9v9 expands the game to a larger field with more players and defined positions. Players develop stronger tactical awareness, teamwork, decision-making and an understanding of how different areas of the field connect.

  • 11v11 (12+ Year Olds)

11v11 is the full-sided version of soccer, played on a regulation-size field. Players build on skills learned in earlier formats while developing advanced positioning, teamwork, decision-making and tactical understanding.
