WEATHER POLICY

2022-23 WEATHER & Air Quality Policy

Coaches are responsible for adhering to the RYSC/RFC Air Quality and Temperature Policy

Air Quality Policy

All decisions relating to air quality will be guided by data from the official club sensor in the purple air network located at Kathy Lund Park.

https://www.purpleair.com/map?opt=1/i/o/mAQI/a30/cC1#16.55/38.808466/-121.290399

** Important - you must select outdoor sensors. The map layer data and conversion must be formatted to the following when obtaining your reading: AQandU - set to one hour average

*In the event the official club sensor is not providing accurate readings due to technical issues, an average of the three next closest sensors to Kathy Lund Park in the purple air network will be used to determine data.

Practices

Practices shall be cancelled for all age groups when the Air Quality Index (AQI) data reading is 150 or above.

Coaches should use caution when conducting practices during an AQI level that falls between 101-149. As a standard, any practice session that falls into this range should be lighter in nature and involve multiple breaks to evaluate players response to the AQI conditions. Coaches are to use their judgement if air quality is unsuitable for practice in this range and may cancel at their discretion based on other elements such as visible ash in the air.

Coaches are responsible for staying updated with current air quality conditions and must notify their team of a cancelled practice at least 1 hour before their scheduled practice time where possible. Should conditions change rapidly before practice starts or during practice the coach should proceed in line with the club's policy.

Game Day Procedures

When Air Quality is a potential issue on game days the following procedures must be adhered to:

  • Either the coach or team manager must contact the opposing team prior to the day of the game to notify them of the club AQI game day policy
  • Attempt to get a contact phone number of the opposing team official in order to notify them effectively of a cancellation due to AQI
  • Effectively notify all relevant parties per the policy below if there are changes to a scheduled game

Game Day Policy

  • Sensor data will be reviewed by the club at 7am on weekend game days, should the reading be 150+, all home games will be cancelled for the day (please note - if your game is early in the morning e.g. 8am; you will be subject to reviewing the AQI data and notifying your opponent in the appropriate timeframe described below)
  • In the case of worsening conditions through the day when Air Quality is a potential issue and sensor data is below 150 at 7am, each team playing at home will review sensor data throughout the day based on their game times and opponent to make a determination of cancellation (see parameters below)
Location of Away Team Sensor reading cut off prior to kick off
Less than 10 miles 1.5 hours
10 – 30 miles 2.5 hours

NorCal rules

AQI of 150+: games must not be played and rescheduled

AQI of 100 – 150: games can be rescheduled

AQI of less than 100: games must be played

Procedural instructions:

  • Communicate with your opposition – as a club we will allow play up to a reading 149 in line with our policy, other teams may request a lower threshold. Make sure to communicate our policy clearly.
  • In the case of worsening conditions where you have to determine whether to reschedule, the club policy must be followed but also keep an eye on the trend (is the air getting worse and how quickly)
  • If your game must be cancelled due to the policy or you agree to a reschedule with the other team these steps must be taken immediately;

  1. Notify all relevant parties (other team, club staff)
  2. Notify the club scheduler at both the following email addresses (scheduler@rocklinfc.org & refereedirector@rocklinfc.org)

**Please note – due to operational logistics, once the club makes a blanket wide cancellation of home games for any given morning or afternoon, games will not be played that time if conditions improve.

Temperature policy for Practices:

For all RYSC Recreation and RFC Competitive teams, if the temperature is 100 degrees or more based on the information from www.kcra.com/weather/index, then practices shall either be limited or changed to “walk through/chalk talk” type with water breaks to occur frequently throughout any practice. In addition, coaches must provide shaded cover (e.g. an “Easy Up”) when the temperature exceeds 99 degrees Fahrenheit. If a shade cover is not available, practice shall be canceled.

At 105+ degrees, all practices must be either canceled or moved to an indoor air conditioned facility for all age groups.

Temperature policy for Games/Events:

Games and Club events may be canceled due to weather or air quality at the discretion of the Club President or Director of Soccer Operations with input from the field coordinator. Please note that teams participating in non-club tournaments are subject to that club or entities rules and cancellation policies.

As always, parents have the right to keep their child home if they are concerned that attending a practice or game is detrimental to their child’s health.
